What to Expect

Demystifying Pain Management: What to Expect When We First Meet

July 9, 2026

Walking into a pain management clinic for the first time can be an intimidating experience. If you are coming to see me, chances are you have already been dealing with physical hurt for quite some time. You might be exhausted, frustrated, and perhaps a little skeptical after navigating a healthcare system that can often feel cumbersome and disconnected.

I want to take a moment to demystify what it actually means to see a pain management specialist and what you can expect when you step into my office.

1. We Start by Listening

Because pain is invisible and entirely subjective, there is no test that can tell me exactly how you feel. Therefore, the most important tool I have isn't a medical device; it is my ability to listen. Our first visit is largely about hearing your story. When did the pain start? How does it affect your daily life, your sleep, your emotional well-being? I want to understand the person behind the pain, because treating the symptom without understanding the patient rarely works.

2. The Detective Work

After we talk, we review your medical history, imaging (like MRIs or X-rays), and perform a physical exam. As I've mentioned before, there is rarely enough time or enough perfect answers from these tests to formulate an instant, flawless diagnosis. However, this detective work allows us to piece together the puzzle of your anatomy and your symptoms to find the most likely source of your discomfort.

3. Building a Custom Blueprint

There is no such thing as a copy-and-paste approach to pain management. What works wonders for one patient’s back pain might do nothing for another's. We will discuss a variety of options—which may include physical therapy, medication management, targeted procedures, or lifestyle adjustments. My job is to take the established medical guidelines and tailor them specifically to you, creating a plan that makes sense for your life and your goals.

4. A Partnership, Not a Quick Fix

I often tell my patients that pain management is a partnership. As your pain changes over time, so too will our treatment plan. We will adjust, we will try new things, and we will celebrate the small victories together.

My ultimate goal has always been, and will always be, to "graduate" you from my practice. I want to equip you with the treatments, tools, and resilience you need to conquer your pain so that you no longer need my services. It is an honor to walk with you on that journey, bringing a little bit of light to a difficult situation. If you are ready to take that first step, we are here to help.
